Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine therapeutic elements of three Native American cultures, and how these elements might impact the practice of Native American counselors. This work represents a continual process and journey of understanding between contemporary counselors and traditional Native philosophies. It is important to understand that this study is intended to highlight various Native approaches and how these philosophies of healing and care can inform one's personal practice. This phenomenological study focuses on the experiences of three Native American women who have graduated from an accredited mental health department, such as a counseling program or a social work program and are currently licensed mental health workers.
